International Drug Abuse Day and Illicit Trafficking Awareness Program

Venue: DAMITS Campus, Rourkela

To combat the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Institute of Technology and Science (DAMITS) hosted an awareness program on International Drug Abuse Day on 12th June 2024 at its campus. The program aimed to educate students and the community about the dangers of substance abuse and the role of society in eradicating illicit drug trafficking.


Program Highlights

The event brought together students, faculty members, and experts to engage in meaningful discussions and activities to spread awareness.

  1. Participation Numbers:

    • Over 200 participants, including 150 students and 50 faculty members, attended the event.
  2. Keynote Address by Experts:

    • Dr. Rajiv Mishra, a renowned psychiatrist, spoke on the theme “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life”, emphasizing the psychological and social consequences of drug abuse.
    • Ms. Ananya Sinha, an anti-drug campaigner, shared real-life stories of individuals who overcame addiction, inspiring the audience to advocate for a drug-free society.
  3. Panel Discussion:
    A panel discussion on the topic “The Role of Youth in Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was held, featuring:

    • Social workers, law enforcement officers, and educators.
    • Discussions focused on identifying signs of drug abuse, supporting affected individuals, and reporting drug trafficking incidents.
  4. Awareness Activities:

    • A poster-making competition witnessed participation from 40 students, showcasing creative messages on drug-free living.
    • An engaging anti-drug pledge was taken by all attendees to commit to a life free from substance abuse.
  5. Documentary Screening:
    A short documentary titled “Breaking the Chains of Addiction” was screened, highlighting the impact of drug addiction on individuals and families.

The event achieved significant milestones in spreading awareness and fostering a collective commitment toward a drug-free society:

    • Students gained knowledge about the harmful effects of drugs and the legal implications of trafficking.
  2. Strengthened Community Action:

    • Faculty and students discussed ways to create a support system for individuals struggling with addiction.

    • The importance of reporting suspicious activities related to drug trafficking was emphasized, encouraging attendees to remain alert.

Future Plans

DAMITS is committed to promoting a drug-free environment and ensuring the well-being of its students and community. Upcoming initiatives include:

  • Conducting monthly awareness workshops on addiction prevention.
  • Collaborating with local law enforcement to organize community vigilance programs.
  • Setting up a counseling center at the campus to provide support to those in need.
